April is one of our favorite months at Crooked Oaks! Azaleas are flowering. Birds are chirping. Life is in full bloom and on display, which makes it the perfect time to share these five reasons Crooked Oaks is a good place to learn about the great outdoors.

Multiple landscapes.
A visit to Crooked Oaks is as diverse as the landscapes—and ecosystems—you’ll find here. Enjoy the calm beauty of pastures. Explore the hidden mysteries of the woods. Experience the wonder of what’s below in our creeks and ponds.
Diverse foliage.
Of course, you’ll find a wide range of azaleas and other native flowering shrubs blooming on our grounds. But you’ll also have the chance to see and learn about the more than 200 varieties of Japanese maples thriving at Crooked Oaks.
In fact, you can stop by our nursery Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and leave with the perfect Japanese maple for your yard!
Variety of wildlife.
Crooked Oaks is home to a variety of wildlife. We have horses grazing on pasture lands. Quail can be spotted among the longleaf pines and sage grass.
Other popular Alabama birds you’re likely to see in the woods include Summer Tanagers and American Goldfinches. If you are luckily, you may even spot raptors such as hawks or barred owls soaring high above the tree line.
We have bass in our ponds, plus we have a healthy population of frogs, lizards and insects—like butterflies. From the ponds to the land, turkeys, deer and black squirrels also call Crooked Oaks home.
Knowledgeable staff.
Our knowledgeable nature-loving staff is ready and willing to assist you, direct you or answer any questions you may have during your Crooked Oaks visit! Plus, we are happy to host any groups looking to learn. Need an activity for your local 4-H Club? Looking for a fun summer camp outing? Let us know! We can organize an educational and entertaining day for your group.
