Planting & Basic Care | USDA Zone 8b

Location

For oakleaf hydrangeas, choose morning sun or filtered shade with protection from intense afternoon sun. Choose a location that has reliable access to water.

Planting & Soil

Plant in fall through early spring. Choose fertile, well-drained soil that holds moisture without staying soggy. Dig a hole twice as wide and one and a half as deep as the root ball. Mix ⅓ pine bark fines, ⅓ mushroom compost, and ⅓ native soil. Set the root ball level slightly above the surrounding soil; mulch is recommended to retain soil moisture, but keep mulch off stems.

Watering

Water deeply after planting. For fall planting water 2-3 times per week until dormant then return watering schedule with spring bud break and through first growing season. For spring planting water deeply and regularly while establishing: 2-3 times per week during the first growing season to keep soil evenly moist during summer heat.

Fertilizing

If needed, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid excessive nitrogen and late-season feeding, which may encourage tender growth.

Pruning

Oakleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood: prune lightly just after flowering, if necessary.

Care needs vary with weather, soil drainage, and planting location.
