Planting & Basic Care | USDA Zone 8b

Location

For camellias, choose a location with morning sun or filtered light and protection from harsh afternoon sun.

Planting & Soil

Plant in fall through early spring in well-drained, acidic soil (approximately pH 5.5–6.5) enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice as wide and one and a half as deep as the root ball. Mix ⅓ pine bark fines, ⅓ Black Kow compost, and ⅓ native soil. Set the root flare slightly above the surrounding soil level and exposed. Mulch away from the trunk if applying.

Watering

Water deeply after planting. For spring planting, water 2-3 times weekly for the first three weeks. For fall or winter planting, water thoroughly after planting and once to twice a week until bloom season ends. Water generally 1–2 times weekly through the growing season; increase during hot, dry weather and adjust for rain and soil moisture. Let the upper soil dry between waterings; established trees are relatively drought-tolerant.

Fertilizing

If needed, apply a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving plants after flowering or as new growth begins in spring, following label rates.

Pruning

Prune lightly just after flowering and before new flower buds develop. Camellia sasanqua typically flowers in the fall; Camellia japonica usually flowers in winter to spring. Remove dead or crowded branches; avoid late-season pruning.

Care needs vary with weather, soil drainage, and planting location.
